Officer talks down suicidal Lorain man

LORAIN — A Lorain police officer talked a suicidal man off the Charles Berry Bascule Bridge early Saturday.

Officer James Wolford wrote in his report that he went to the bridge around 1:30 a.m. and found John Wittcop with one leg over the railing and was balancing as if he was going to jump.

Wittcop, 41, then brought his other leg over the railing and was leaning backward, the report said.

Wolford wrote that he began talking to Wittcop, with whom he’d dealt before and convinced him to come back over the railing.

Wittcop, who lives in Lorain, told Wolford he was having financial, legal and family problems and didn’t want to live.

Wolford wrote that he convinced Wittcop to go to Mercy Regional Medical Center for an evaluation and he transported him to the hospital.

Burned Lorain boy remains in critical

A 4-year-old boy severely burned during a March 23 fire at his Lorain home remained in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland a week after the blaze.

Nasire King received second- and third-degree burns over 90 percent of his body after a sibling set fire to the blanket the boy was sleeping on, Lorain police and fire officials have said. There is no plan to charge the sibling, whose age was not released.

Firefighters were called to the West 19th Street home around 1 a.m. and it took about 45 minutes to get the fire contained.

Nasire’s mother, Nicole King, was outside with her seven children and her mother and told investigators that she got everyone out of the house after her mother alerted her to the fire.
