J.C. Chapman was eastbound in a 2001 Jeep Cherokee when he veered left and crossed the median, according to Trooper Lance Deshuk of the Ohio Highway Patrol Elyria post. Chapman crossed the westbound lanes and drove down an embankment, crashed through a fence and struck a guardrail, Deshuk said.

Chapman sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized at EMH Elyria Medical Center. Deshuk said Chapman smelled of alcohol and a blood test was taken at the hospital. The results are pending.

Deshuk said a straw and a small amount of what is believed to be cocaine were seized from the Cherokee. Chapman, 24, of the 600 block of Dewey Avenue, was charged with drunken driving, failure to control, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Chapman was being held at the Lorain County Jail without bond Sunday night and is due in Elyria Municipal Court today.

The forfeiture of Chapman’s license was sought by the Elyria Municipal Court from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday, according to court records. The forfeiture was sought after Chapman failed to pay a $203 speeding ticket from a Dec. 14 incident in Columbia Township.
