Trash pickup expected to resume tomorrow

CARLISLE TWP. — Republic Waste expects to resume trash pickup Tuesday after a solidarity strike today, a company official said.

Eric Van Houten, general manager of Republic’s Lorain County operations, said afternoon shift mechanics showed up for work and that the picket outside the company’s Butternut Ridge Road facility was gone.

Martin Jay, business representative and trustee for Teamsters Local 20, which represents local Republic workers, said that as long as Teamsters from Youngstown don’t decide to extend their picket line to Lorain County against Tuesday workers will be back on the job.

The Youngstown local has been locked in a dispute with Republic and went on strike last week. They showed up Monday to picket in Carlisle Township and local Republic workers didn’t cross the line.

Van Houten said some trash was picked up today across the area, but Republic trash pickup in Lorain, Cuyahoga and Medina counties will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week.
