Lawrence Leonard Massey, 75, of Vermilion, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph after a short illness. He was born May 13, 1937 in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past year, moving from Elyria where he had resided since 1955.
Larry worked for Ford Motor Co., Lorain, as a high low repair mechanic for 40 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Harbourtown Community Church, Vermilion, and the Elyria Masonic Lodge #787, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason. Larry enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, building and racing dragsters, gardening, flowers and he loved watching sports on TV.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Janie S. Massey; mother, Mary Louise (nee Whitten) Massey of Tennessee; sons, Darrel Keith (Donna) Massey and Bert Frank (Lori) Massey, all of Elyria; grandchildren, Madison Ann, Alysa Sue and Luke; brother, Vernari Neal of Tennessee; step daughters, Suzanne (Alan) Baxter of Vermilion, Kathryn Lawler of Florida, and Melinda (Bill) Jacques of Vermilion; stepson, Daniel (Greta) Williams; seven step grandchildren; 13 step great grandchildren; and his ex-wife and mother of his children, Kathy Massey of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Neal Massey; son, Kerry Duane Massey in February 2012; and step great grandsons, Cody Ryan and Nathan Charles Baxter.
The family will receive friends Sunday, April 7, 2013, from 4 to 7 P.M., at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, 44089. Funeral Services will be Monday, April 8, 2013, at 11 A.M., in the funeral home, with Pastor Jim Cooper officiating. Inurnment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion, at a later date.
