H.S. Baseball: Elyria, Elyria Catholic get together, split doubleheader

ELYRIA — Sometimes, splitting a doubleheader can benefit both sides.
At least that’s how the coaches felt after Elyria and Elyria Catholic took turns winning Saturday at K of C Field behind EC. The Pioneers won the opener
4-1, and the Panthers came-from-behind to take the second game 8-6, leaving Elyria High
3-1 on the year and EC 1-3.
Elyria’s defense and speed helped take the first game. The Pioneers took advantage of extra baserunners thanks to five hit batters and six EC errors, but returned the favor in the second game.
Elyria’s pitchers walked six and hit two batters over a rocky two-inning stretch that saw a
5-0 advantage dissipate in the cold and windy conditions.
“Our middle infield — I’ll put it up against anybody,” Elyria coach Ed Piazza said of senior shortstop Chris Emerson and senior second baseman Mike Izzarelli. “Even the first two games, it’s been the defense that’s bailed us out. If we throw strikes, our defense will do the job.”
“We were struggling after going 0-3,” EC coach Bruce Lisicky said. “It was nice to get that win. We finally turned the tide — a lot of walks, hit batters and errors. It was nice to see it on the other end.”
In the first game, Elyria’s defense made several key plays, including a crisp 4-6-3 double play to end the sixth inning after EC put the first two runners on. Izzarelli not only flashed the leather for the Pioneers, but did had four hits and four RBIs on the day.
On top of that, he stole four bases and scored three times — numbers top-of-the-order hitters are expected to provide. Emerson had three hits on the day, and Mike Parron, Brodie Stewart and Brandon Welsandt each had two.
“It’s a whole new attitude with this team,” Izzarelli said. “We’re trying not to be selfish and play for each other. We just want to get the win. It was a tough second (game) loss.”
In the second game, EC bounced off the carpet after falling behind 5-0 going into its half of the fifth inning. The Panthers scored twice, but Elyria answered with a run to lead 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.
That’s when Elyria Catholic took advantage of two walks and an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Dan Whitacre, who pitched fairly well over the first four innings, pushed across a run by coaxing a walk. Joe Begany then drove in two with a double to the gap in left-center to pull EC within 6-5.
A throwing error on Ian Kovacs’ groundball brought home the tying run, and after Elyria pitcher Chris Emerson hit Zach Brosky to load the bases, Brian Mahilo singled home Begany for the lead.
“It’s nice to get that first win out of the way,” said Begany, a lefty-hitting junior first baseman who had two of EC’s three hits in the first game. “It always seems to be the toughest one, especially against a good team like Elyria.”
“Bad things just seem to happen to this second group,” Piazza said of the lineup used in the second game. “It takes a lot after you sit all day, but you have to learn and overcome those mistakes. They’ll get it. They’re part of the team and they’re working hard, too.”
Both teams start conference play this week — Elyria in the rugged Valley Division of the Northeast Ohio Conference against Mentor and Brunswick, and EC in the West Shore against Vermilion and Midview after a non-conference test with Berea.
