Eda Matilda Freeland

Eda Matilda Freeland (nee Kirschner), 92, and a resident of Elyria, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013 at Wesyalan Village in Elyria. She was born September 20, 1920 in Amherst. Eda was raised and resided  in Amherst for most of her life and graduated from Central High School in the class of 1938. She had moved to Vermilion in 1995 before moving to Elyria, where she had resided until her passing.

Eda loved to work and was employed as a bookkeeper at the Price Insurance Agency and Standen and Guthman Insurance Agency for 35 years before retiring. In her younger years, she worked along side of her husband, Milton, at the Cadillac Tank Plant in Cleveland. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Amherst. Eda was active with the Lorain County Republican party, AARP,  and the Women’s Insurance Association of Ohio whose conventions she enjoyed attending. She enjoyed attending races at the Kentucky Derby, also ballroom dancing, and traveling with her husband on ballroom dance cruises. Most of all, Eda loved hosting gatherings at her home and cooking for her family and friends.

Survivors include her son, William Grant Freeland of Gunnison, Colorado; daughters, Marcia Diana Moorhead and her husband Tom of Bay Village, Dorothea “Dottie” Marie Freeland of Maui, Hawaii, Bonnie Lynn Ericson and her husband Bruce of Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Nemec of Westlake, and Evie Kreeger of Amherst.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Milton Grant Freeland on October 29, 1999; her infant son, David Freeland; her brother, Herman Kirschner in 1996; her sister, Hilda Schramm in 2010; and by her parents, Ben and Emma Kirschner (nee Manke).

Friends may call Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 11 A.M. in the funeral home. The Rev. Terrance Adamson, Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
