H.S. Baseball: Elyria’s K.J. Allgood delivers when it counts to beat Amherst

ELYRIA — Baseball is all about the next at-bat, and Elyria’s K.J. Allgood took advantage of his.
After an admittedly bad first six innings, Allgood thought he was going to be pinch-hit for in the seventh with the bases loaded. Pioneers coach Ed Piazza said he was ready to make the move until, “I saw something in his eyes.”
Allgood responded by ripping a one-out fastball off Amherst reliever Shane Derricotte to score Mike Parron and Brodie Stewart for a 6-5 victory over the Comets on Friday afternoon.
“(Allgood) has been taking some third strikes lately and I was going to make a move,” Piazza said. “But when they made the pitching change, I could see that he wanted to be out there with the game on the line.”
Allgood’s heroics were needed after Amherst (11-2) overcame a slow start to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth. The Comets scored three on a single to right by Brandon Chesmar, a bases-loaded walk from Aaron Soto and a slow roller to short by Adam Board to take their first lead since 1-0 in the first inning.
“We didn’t lose that game in the seventh, we lost it in the first and second inning,” said Comets first-year coach Matt Rositano. “I don’t think we were focused to start the game. We had a chance to knock out their pitcher with bases loaded twice and didn’t do it.”
The first three batters reached against Pioneers starter Steve Poskocil on a walk, a hit batter and a sharp single to left off the bat of Connor Morris.
Poskocil got Griffin Weir and Chesmar on short flyballs, but Kody Bledsoe scratched across a run with an infield single up the middle. Soto popped out to shortstop to end the threat.
Elyria (4-4) responded in its half of the first. Stewart drove in a pair with a bases-loaded single to right-center, and a Jacob Csizmadia groundball to short gave the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.
Amherst again loaded the bases in the second on an Adam Board double and walks to Alex Walts and Corey Stamco, but again could only drive one run across on a groundball to second by Morris.
The score stayed that way until the Pioneers picked up a run in the third off Comets starter Eric Lamb (0-1), who ended up the tough-luck loser after going 6⅓ innings. He scattered seven hits and was charged with all five Elyria runs.
Poskocil settled down in the middle innings and got help with a double play and a caught stealing. But Amherst threatened again in the fifth, bringing sophomore Kevin Cloen to the mound with one run in and the bases still loaded.
Cloen (1-0) gave up the lead, but ended up the winner after Allgood’s timely hit.
“I was trying to take advantage of the opportunity given me,” said Allgood, who had been 0-for-3. “I took a 2-0 pitch right down the middle and he threw another one down the middle. I was really down before that at-bat.
“Coach told me that everyone strikes out and no one is perfect. The coach lifted me up and there it is right there.”
Both teams are back at it today with doubleheaders. Elyria hosts Avon Lake, while Amherst travels to Lorain.
