John F. Downs, 98, of Carlisle Township, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at The North Ridge Health Center in North Ridgeville. He was born in Carlisle Township and lived in North Ridgeville for many years prior to moving back to Carlisle Twp.
John worked for many years as a meat cutter for Pete Ferraro Market and Downs Market in Westlake for 10 years. He had also worked for American Standard and Tappan Co. in Elyria prior to retiring in 1980.
John was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran, he was a life member of CBI Veteran’s Assoc. (China, Burma, India), American Legion Post 12, and V.F.W. Post #1079 in Elyria, Knights of Columbus Council #774 in Elyria, Lt. Francis McManus Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Grafton.
Survivors include a son, James Downs (Deborah) of Carlisle Township; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Katherine and James Downs.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita (nee Camp); sisters, Loretta Salter, Rose Gunderson, Marcella Downs, Mary Solet; and brothers, Edward and Eugene Downs.
Family will receive friends 2 to 5 P.M., Sunday, April 28, 2013 at The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), where closing prayers will be at 9:30 A.M., Monday, April 29, 2013. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 A.M., Monday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 708 Erie St., Grafton, where Rev. Fr. John Patrick Seabold, Pastor will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Elyria, where V.F.W. Post #1079 will provide full military honors.
