Patrol Sgt. Pablo Cruz said investigators were trying to find the driver to determine whether the vehicle was traveling with David Makaryk, who crashed his 2003 Ford Focus off the left side of state Route 252 at 8:40 a.m.
Cruz said it appeared as if the Columbia Station man may have been trying to pass the driver of the Ford F-150, who witnesses reported was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Makaryk, 44, traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking two utility poles, before the car came to a rest.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cruz said the driver of the Ford F-150 was not involved in the crash, but investigators were hoping to speak with the man to determine what happened. The man did not stop after the crash, according to a news release from the patrol.
Cruz said there was no indication that Makaryk was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but the crash is under investigation.
