Virginia Mae Pence

Virginia Mae Pence (nee Miller), 91, of Avon, died peacefully at her home Monday, April 29, 2013. She was born August 17, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois.

She was a 1939 graduate of Lakewood High School and during WWII, worked as a “Riveter” in the U.S. Bomber Plant in Cleveland. She attended Baldwin Wallace and Case Western Reserve University and was employed for many years as a systems analyst at Bonne Bell in Lakewood.

She taught English as a second language, was a certified swimming instructor at Lakewood Y.W.C.A. and a volunteer camp counselor. Virginia enjoyed quilting, snorkeling, swimming, reading, crossword puzzles, computer games and loving her family. She and her husband took many trips with Elderhostel and visited 48 states.

Virginia is survived by her husband of 71 years, Wallace J. “Wally” Pence; daughters, Judy M. (Kenneth) Ludwig of Norfolk, Connecticut and Janet K. (Jeffery) Eby of Avon; son, Reverend James W. (Marcia Becker) Pence of Waynesboro, Virginia; grandchildren, Benjamin and Matthew Ludwig, Elizabeth Kusnerik, Brian Pence and Steven Eby. Also surviving are seven great grandchildren, with one more on the way.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Miller.

Friends will be received Friday, May 3, 2013 from 9:30 A.M., until the time of an 11 A.M. memorial service at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 360 Princeton Ave., Elyria, with Reverend Paul Jaster officiating. Interment will be in Waynesboro, Virginia.
