Mr. Shumate was a Licensed Bail Bondsman for the State of Ohio and was a well known speaker on WJTB Radio 1040am, on the program, “Speak Up and Speak Out”. He was also a life member of the NAACP Oberlin and Elyria Branch and the organizer for King of Kings for the memorial month of April. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving two tours in the Vietnam War and was also involved with the Veterans Administration for Lorain County.
He enjoyed discussing the Bible, black history, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories his companion of many years, Christella Willis of Elyria; daughter, Marie Gardener of Elyria; son, Philip Shumate of Columbus; grandson, Pvt. Terrance Shumate of the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan; and two granddaughters, Alexandria Gardener and Kayla Gardener, both of Elyria; sisters, Katherine (James) Legard and Karen Jean (Michael) Taylor, both of Elyria; aunt, Barbara Jean Wiggins of Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford F. and Ellen L. Shumate; son, Clifford Shumate III; and brother, Richard “Buba” Shumate.
Friends may call Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 6 to 8 P.M., at Carter Funeral Home, 127 W. Bridge Street, Elyria, and Thursday, May 9, 2013, 10 A.M., until the time of service at 11 A.M., at Original Glorious Apostolic Church, 995 Foster Ave, Elyria. Reverend Dixie Smith will officiate. Pastor Doris E. Williams will give the eulogy.
Burial will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Veterans Cemetery in Rittman.
