Man fatally shoots himself in county jail lot

ELYRIA — A man drove to the Lorain County Sheriff’s office Saturday afternoon, parked in the parking lot near the jail’s sally port and shot himself.

The man, who has not been identified pending notification of his family, died at the jail, according to Lorain County Chief Deputy Coroner Frank Miller. The death is being looked at as a suicide.

Miller said it appeared as if the man planned to carry out the act at the jail. A note and shotgun were recovered.

Sheriff’s deputies immediately responded after hearing the shot shortly before 3 p.m. Information on why the man chose the jail as the location for his death is not known at this time.

At no time were any sheriff’s deputies, jail personnel or inmates threatened.
