H.S. Track and Field: Avon boys lap field, repeat as WSC champs

AVON — Revenge can be sweet, even if it comes against a relative.
North Ridgeville’s Paul Sonego defended his 400-meter title at the West Shore Conference championships Friday. It could have been a three-peat were it not for Bay’s Nathan Baumgard, who won the 400 by .001 in 2011.
Sonego gave Nathan’s younger brother, Zach, a taste of how it felt to come up just short, edging him by about a tenth of a second. Sonego seemed to have the race in hand until the final stretch, where Baumgard made a strong drive for a photo finish.
“I definitely had to push myself because Zach really pushed me,” Sonego said. “I felt pretty comfortable, then all of a sudden I heard him coming up. I knew it would be down to the wire.”
As a team, the Rangers came up short. Avon won its second straight WSC championship by a mile with 171½ points. North Ridgeville was second with 104.
“Our team has been working our butts off this entire year,” said Avon’s Blake Pecoraro, who took first in the 1,600 and 3,200. “Everyone is getting the personal records, we’ve had tons of people this season breaking school records. We have the potential and today we’re just showing that potential is a reality.”
Brentten Wiley was a big reason for Avon’s success. He placed first in the 200, the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles in addition to being part of Avon’s 800-meter relay that took top honors. His victory in the 110 didn’t come easy.
“I had a bad start, but I’m usually a strong second-half runner,” Wiley said. “I just tried to push myself to the finish in the second half of the race and it worked out well for me. I give props to the kid from North Ridgeville. I know he’ll do great things next year.”
On the girls side, Rocky River’s seven-year reign came to an end at the hands of Bay. The Rockets scored 147 points to Rocky River’s 121.
Vermilion took third with 110⅓, and Hannah Bartlome was part of three first-place finishes: the high jump, long jump and 400-meter relay with teammates AuBree LaForce, Annie Rossi and Mallory Morris. Bartlome, LaForce, Morris and Abbey Bodeker placed third in the 800 relay.
“Long jump was the event I was nervous for today,” said Bartlome, who set the WSC record in 2012 at 16-10¾. “There are so many good girl long jumpers in this conference, just like high jump. I just wanted to get a good jump in the prelims so hopefully it would carry out into the finals.”
That’s exactly what she did, going 16-4 on her second jump of preliminaries. It held up.
Also critical in Vermilion’s cause were Savannah Mowry and Ellen Rossi, who took first and third in the shot put and discus.
The race of the day belonged to Elyria Catholic’s Justin Rankin in the 100. The sophomore was edged in preliminaries by North Ridgeville freshman Demario McCall by less than a tenth of a second. Rankin returned the favor by .3 in the final in a come-from-behind win.
“Wednesday, when he beat me, my blocks were really bad,” Rankin said. “I stayed until at least 10 p.m. practicing my blocks all day. I had to have good blocks to keep up with him.”
Also turning in a strong performance for the Panthers was Michaela Foisy, who took second in the 1,600 and 3,200. Her finish in the 1,600 set a school record at 5:12.06, beating the old mark by four seconds. But she had to hold off Rocky River’s Madi Connelly by a second to secure silver.
“It was really unexpected,” Foisy said. “I was going into today as a practice for districts. I wasn’t expecting to break that record for about three weeks now.”
