Man pleads guilty to neglect of mom

ELYRIA — A Lorain man pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges he failed to care for his 70-year-old mother, who had broken bones and was covered with human waste when she was found by Lorain police last year.

Steven Whitman, 52, could get prison time in the case when he is sentenced on the two counts of failing to provide for a functionally impaired person later this year.

Police were called to Whitman’s house Nov. 19 after neighbors heard him screaming at his mother, Janet Whitman, at the Delaware Avenue home where they both lived.

Steven Whitman met police in his driveway and told officers he was yelling because his mother had spilled her food. Neighbors told police that they often heard the son screaming at his mother and had heard him say that he wished she was dead.

Inside the house, police found Janet Whitman, whom they estimated weighed 70 pounds. She had trouble communicating and was covered in food, urine and feces. The house smelled of garbage, human waste and spilled food, police reported.

Paramedics found bruises on the woman and noted that she had a broken arm. After Janet Whitman was taken to the hospital, medical personnel discovered she had a broken hip and bed sores.

An attorney for Steven Whitman has said his client had wanted to take his mother for medical treatment after the home health service he had once employed ceased. Janet Whitman refused, according to attorney John Prusak, who did not return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

Janet Whitman, who had cancer, has since died, but her death was unrelated to the lack of care she received from her son, according to prosecutors.
