Avon makes magazine’s list of top 3 best suburbs

AVON — It takes a lot to be considered the best suburb of Cleveland, but Avon has been slowly climbing the list, according to a recent ranking by Cleveland Magazine.
Each year, Cleveland Magazine examines communities in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties. Those towns are rated based on various attributes including safety, education, home sale prices, property taxes, roads with sidewalks and total community service.
Avon ranked third this year among the 77 suburbs rated by Cleveland Magazine. Last year, the city was ninth.
Avon Mayor Jim Smith said he was thrilled to learn about the nod, and he credited low property taxes and a good education system as two reasons why the city climbed in the ratings.
“It takes a lot to make me happy, and this makes me very happy,” he said. “It’s a team effort. It has to do with each teacher, each firefighter, each road worker.”
Smith said it’s remarkable that the city beat several suburbs that have been around for much longer.
“Avon is coming along quick,” he said.
According to Cleveland Magazine, Avon ranked 10th in education and 39th in safety. The city had a relatively high involvement in community service and a high median home sale price — $253,900 in 2012 — in comparison to the other suburbs on the list.
The only other suburb in Lorain County to make the top 20 this year was Avon Lake, which ranked 13th. Avon Lake climbed four spots from last year, and ranked 16th in safety and 15th in education.
Other Lorain County cities did not fare as well.
Lorain, which has generally done poorly in the ranking, was ranked 76th in safety, ahead of only East Cleveland. Elyria ranked 47th in education and 69th in safety.
The median home sale prices of both Lorain and Elyria were low in comparison to the other suburbs, at $58,750 and $77,000, respectively.
The suburb receiving the highest rank this year was Solon, which also was ranked first in education. Rocky River was ranked second on the list and second in education.
