Rita Pentito (nee Marter), 87, of Lorain, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Specialty Hospital of Lorain. She was born on December 11, 1925 in Linton, Indiana to the late Albert and Mary (nee Grounds) Marter.
In 1943, Rita graduated from Linton-Stockton High School. Immediately following high school, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps, a program that was supervised by the United States Public Health Service (PHS) to train nurses during World War II. Through the program, she attended St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing in Terra Haute, Indiana. Upon graduation she met her husband, and they moved to the Lorain area in 1946.
Rita started her career as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain for a few years and then in 1950 became a nurse at Amherst Hospital, where she worked for 32 years. She continued her nursing career at Kingston of Vermilion and retired from there on her 70th birthday with 50 dedicated years of care as a nurse.
She was an active member of the Church of St. Peter being involved as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Mission Group and the parish R.C.I.A. team. She also was a member of the Widow and Widowers Club and the Senior Citizens Group, both of St. Peter’s.
For many years, Rita was a member and past president of the Business and Professional Women of Amherst, which later became known as Women Helping Others. She also volunteered many years with the Friends of Lorain County Metro Parks.
Enjoying many hand crafts, she created beautiful items from embroidery, crocheting and knitting.
She is survived by her son, Joseph C. (Karen) of Amherst; her daughters, Mary Pentito of Amherst and Dorothy Pentito of Lorain; her grandchildren, Richard Snezek, Jr. (fiancée Dana Bauer), Christopher Snezek, Peggie Jo Frederick, Joseph C. Pentito (fiancée Nicole Smith), Peter A. (Katie) Pentito; and step grandson, Aaron S. Ramos; 16 great-grandchildren; her brother, John Marter of Peoria, Illinois; and her sisters, Margaret Ham of Terra Haute, Indiana and Phyllis Zalog of Naples, Florida.
Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1977; her three day old son, Peter Andrew; her brother, Robert Marter; her sister, Evelyn LaCarter and a sibling at birth.
The Pentito family will receive family and friends on Friday, June 7, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Closing prayers will be said at 9 A.M. on Saturday, June 8, 2013 in the funeral center followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 A.M. at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave. Rev. Fr. Craig Hovanec will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
