MONTVILLE TWP. — A man was injured when a 16-year-old driver from Avon Lake hit his motorcycle after going through a red light Wednesday night, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Lt. Bill Haymaker said a 2006 tan Jeep Liberty driven by Matthew Sarko, 16, of Avon Lake, was turning left from the exit off Interstate 71 onto state Route 18 at 10:14 p.m. Sarko went through a red light and hit a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle that was traveling east on Route 18, Haymaker said.

The motorcycle’s rider, Carmen Cassella, 56, of Fairlawn, was taken to Medina Hospital then transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center by emergency helicopter, where he was listed in good condition Thursday.

Sarko has been cited with failure to yield and driving outside restrictions, because he was driving with four other teenage passengers, Haymaker said.

YES. THANK YOU Avon Lake Police for actually ticketing a vehicle driver when they hit a motorcycle!, let alone a 16 year old on a permit for driving outside of restrictions. I often label springtime as “open season to hit motorcycles free of any ticketing charges”, because all you read is “no charges were filed” when the article clearly states the vehicle driver violated the motorcycle operators right of way.
    Seems spring is over.
Also you never see the teenager being ticketed for violating restrictions. Why they have that law and no officers ticketing for it is beyond me. Thank you Avon Lake PD for restoring my faith!

I hope other 16 year olds are reading this. I also hope the penalty for the violation is deep enough to wake this 16 year old (know it all, I’m good, I’m invincible mentality) up.

Wasn’t Avon Lake PD but OSP as this happened in Montiville Township.

And usually when the article states no charges filed, it means they are usually still investigating and charges will be filed once the evidence is handed to the prosecutor. This is the second motorcycle involved accident involving a 16 year old driver in 1 week. Unreal…..
