Eastern Lorain County under tornado warning

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for eastern areas of Lorain County, particularly near the lakefront.

Areas included are Sheffield Lake, Avon Lake, North Ridgeville, Sheffield and Avon, and well as Cleveland and most west side suburbs. The warning lasts until midnight.

At 11:05 p.m. Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado 8 miles north of Avon Lake and 13 miles northeast of Lorain, according to the Weather Service. It was moving southeast at 30 mph.

The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement, according to the Weather Service. If no basement is available, seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or closet.
