Man tackles alleged car thief

LORAIN — A Lorain man was arrested after he was tackled by another man who witnessed him breaking into his vehicle, police said.

Cody Shafer, 19, was arrested after a brief chase at 5 a.m. Saturday. Officers arrived to find Brian Boggs pinning Shafer to the ground in the backyard of a home on E Street.

Boggs told police he was inside his house getting ready for work when he heard a “strange noise” coming from near his vehicle, which was parked in the driveway near his garage. Boggs looked outside and said he found Shafer stealing items from his car.

Boggs then confronted Shafer, chasing him through several yards before tackling him, according to a police report.

Police said Shafer had a blue bag full of items around his neck. Property recovered included a Nintendo game system, headphones, an iPhone, two cell phone chargers, Nike tennis shoes, women’s earrings, loose change and a watch.

Shafer admitted to stealing the items from random vehicles in the area, according to a police report.

He was charged with petty theft, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, vehicle trespass and possession of criminal tools.

Shafer’s luckier than he will ever know. Wrong guy’s car? Hardly. Many would just fix him up so he could never run again.

A 19 year old car burglar that can’t outrun a homeowner?

Might want to think about givin’ up the smokes while you’re in jail Cody.
