John F. Withum, Jr., 72, and a resident of Amherst, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, June 16, 2013, after a courageous battle against cancer. Jack was born May 7, 1941 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He graduated from North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. He then spent two years in India while serving in the Peace Corps. After returning from India, he went back to school to receive his Master’s Degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Over the years, Jack worked for various mental health agencies and hospitals, some of which include St. Joseph Hospital, Providence Hospital and Murray Ridge from which he retired in February, 2012. He also did private practice counseling for many years.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sandra (Kendrick) Withum of Amherst; his three children, Mike (Jess) Withum of Hinesburg, Vermont, Casey (Jim) Alexander of Wakeman and Sally (Todd) Eberhardt of Amherst. He also had five dear grandchildren, Ed and Travis Alexander, Holly and Andie Eberhardt, Owen Withum and one granddaughter on the way, as well as one great grandson, Mason Alexander. Jack is also survived by his four siblings in Pennsylvania, Barbara Withum, Irene Negle, Larry Withum and Maureen (Bruce) Golmic and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Withum, Sr. and Irene (Maroney) Withum.
Friends may call Friday, June 21, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 22, 2013, at 11 A.M. in the funeral home.
