July 1 marks the beginning of Lorain County’s second photo contest called “Show Us How You Move It.”
The contest will give residents a chance to submit a picture of themselves, a family member or a friend taking part in regular physical activity.
“For example, we get photos of people fishing, walking their dogs and gardening,” said Katie Bevan, the district’s health educator. “It lets residents know that physical activity comes in many different shapes and sizes, not just going to the gym.”
Last year, 150 Lorain County residents entered the contest. Photo subjects ranged from a child on monkey bars to a family running together to an individual jumping on a trampoline.
“We’re hoping for even greater participation this year,” Bevan said. “We’re focusing on workplaces because many are promoting healthier lifestyles for their employees.”
“Show Us How You Move It” welcomes photos from solo contributors as well as businesses that want to show off office-wide collaborative activities. After the deadline, Lorain County residents will be asked to vote on the health district’s website or Facebook page for the best picture.
“The contest is a neat idea,” said Janine Trottier, one of last year’s finalists, who enjoys walking in the Metro Parks with a friend.
The photo she submitted is of her son racing in Tough Mudder, a 10- to 12-mile, challenging obstacle course.
“I’m not a real techie, and (the contest is) easy and cool to do.”
According to the health district’s Lorain County Community Health Assessment, 67 percent of adult residents and 14 percent of the county’s youth are overweight or obese.
People within the district support the agency’s efforts to encourage physical wellness.
“It’s important for everyone,” said last year’s contest winner, Kim Polen, whose photo shows her son Joel, 8, playing his first season of soccer. “Especially for kids, it keeps them social and moving around.”
Polen describes her family as active. Joel enjoys running, his parents do aerobics and his sister is a gymnast. As a family, the Polens spend time outdoors on their farm.
Photo submissions for the “Show Us How You Move It” contest sponsored by the Lorain County General Health District may be made July 1 to 21 at www.loraincountyhealth.com/photovoice. All are welcome to participate.
