Man gets prison for Elyria break-ins

ELYRIA — An Elyria man who was tied to break-ins at the American Legion post on Ohio Street and Twist-n-Shake on Cleveland Street was sentenced to nine months in prison last week.
Benjamin Krugman, 27, also was ordered to pay restitution of $2,275 to the Legion and $1,000 to the ice cream store by Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Christopher Rothgery.
The American Legion was burglarized three times in November, including once when the burglar cut a hole in drywall to enter the building.
In addition to pleading guilty to breaking and entering charges in April, Krugman also pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence for destroying a piece of clothing he wore during one of the break-ins.

Green Acres money help fund campers

ELYRIA — Lorain County Probate Judge James Walther has approved donating $800 from the sale of the old Green Acres Children’s Home to send children participating in the Pathfinders Youth Program to this year’s Adventure Challenge at Common Ground in Oberlin.
In a court ruling last week, Walther determined that using the money on Pathfinders directly benefitted the children of Lorain County. Walther oversees the spending of the $265,000 that the county received from the sale of the long-shuttered orphanage to Oberlin last.
Before the sale was approved, Walther had to lift restrictions on the deed that required the property be used for the benefit of the children of the county. But he ruled that the money generated from the sale must be used for the same purpose.
