Reverend Arthur Clair Sperry

Sperry, ArthurReverend Arthur Clair Sperry, 83, of Elyria, died Friday, June 28, 2013 at his home. He was born August 11, 1929 in Streetsboro, the youngest son of Arthur Gleason Sperry and Lorena Bosworth Sperry.

Art graduated from Streetsboro High School in 1946 and from Hiram College in 1950 with a B.S. degree in Religion and Philosophy. He received a degree of Bachelor of Divinity from Oberlin Graduate School of Theology. He also had a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University School of Theology and a degree of Doctor of Ministry from Boston University.

Dr. Sperry became a member of the North East Ohio Annual Conference in 1954. He served 40 years in United Methodist churches in Painesville, North Industry, Shreve-Newkirk, Canton, Simpson, Dover and First United Methodist Church in Elyria from 1985, until retiring in 1992.

He served as District Secretary of the Canton District, and on the District board of Ministry. In the Cambridge District, he was the District Missionary Secretary, and also served on the conference nominating committee. In Elyria, he served on the board of the Samaritan Counseling Center, now Pathways Counseling and Growth Center.

Art is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beverly A. (nee Lindsay); and daughters, Linda and her partner, Linda Chopra, Susan and her husband, Dr. Allan Landes; brothers, Donald Sperry of Tallahassee, Florida and Elwood Sperry of Cleveland, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lyman Sperry.

A service will be held Friday, July 5, 2013 at 11 A.M. in First United Methodist Church, 312 Third St., Elyria, with Reverend Roger Talbott officiating. A committal service will be Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 11 A.M. at Evergreen Burial Park, in New Philadelphia, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
