ELYRIA — Police arrested a man who was sleeping Sunday morning after finding his two young children playing in the roadway unsupervised.

Officers were sent to the 800 block of Broad Street at 8:10 a.m. Sunday after a woman called police to report that two children were outside her home, running around without adult supervision. The woman and her neighbor told police they tried communicating with the children but were unsuccessful.

Police said the boys, ages 2 and 5, were dirty, and the 2-year-old was wearing a diaper with feces in it and no shoes. The older boy, who is autistic, had trouble communicating with officers, according to a police report.

Lorain County Children Services was notified of the incident, and the boys’ father was contacted at his home on Broad Street.

The father, Herman Shreves, 28, was cited for two counts of child endangering. Police said Shreves was sleeping when officers made contact with him.
