State fire marshal looking into cause of bar fire

GRAFTON TWP. — A fire that severely damaged the Trading Post Bar, 15478 Grafton-Eastern Road, but caused no injuries is under investigation.

Firefighters were called at 4:58 a.m. Wednesday, according to Fire Chief Bob Richards, who said the two-story building at state routes 83 and 57 is “uninhabitable.” Richards said state Fire Marshal office investigators were called because there was an arson fire at the bar on March 31 or April 1, 2012, and his department always calls the office for fires at businesses.

However, Richards said there was no reason to believe the fire was suspicious at this time. “Until they conclude their investigation, we don’t know,” he said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in about three hours, and it was extinguished about 3 p.m. Richards said the Columbia Township, Eaton Township, Grafton and LaGrange fire departments helped fight the blaze. In addition to the intensity of the fire, hot weather hampered their efforts.

“Guys just don’t hold up in this weather,” Richards said. “So we wanted to make sure we had enough personnel to rotate out and rehab.”
