In response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who shot and killed 17-year-old African American Trayvon Martin, the International Council for Urban Peace, Justice & Empowerment Inc. of Lorain County has organized a rally to memorialize his death and the deaths of others in the county.
Peaceful demonstrations aiming to draw attention to racism in the U.S. legal system have sprouted up across the country since Zimmerman’s trial closed.
“We’re taking momentum of other rallies to point out some of the injustices that happen locally,” said co-organizer Marcus Atkinson.
The county rally is 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday in Veterans Park, downtown Lorain.
“We’re being proactive not reactive,” said co-organizer Imam Paul Hasan, describing the rally as a fight for right versus wrong. “We must work together to address these concerns and see change in our community.”
