Eight applicants so far for vacant North Ridgeville Council seat

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — With three days left before the deadline, there are eight candidates for the Council seat open after the death of longtime Councilman Richard Jaenke.

“It’s definitely more than I expected,” City Council President Kevin Corcoran, R, at-large, said Tuesday.

Anyone interested in the post has until 5 p.m. Friday to submit biographical information and resumes to Corcoran.

Corcoran declined to release the names of the residents who have submitted information to him so far by email. The Chronicle-Telegram has made a formal request for them.

“I have no problem with releasing the names, but I want to wait until we have reached Friday’s deadline,” Corcoran said. “We want to have as many people apply as possible,” Corcoran said.

Law Director Andy Crites and The Chronicle traded calls Tuesday without ever connecting regarding the release of the names.

Most of the eight people up for consideration are Republicans, as was Jaenke, and include a couple of former Council members, according to Corcoran.

“There are definitely some familiar names out there,” Corcoran said.

Jaenke, 78, passed away July 5 from cancer.

A retired Ohio Bell Co. employee and veteran Realtor, Jaenke was in his fourth term on City Council, and chaired the Safety Committee.

The city charter requires a replacement be named for the remainder of Jaenke’s term no later than 30 days from the date of the July 15 Council meeting.

Because Council’s Aug. 19 meeting falls beyond the 30-day time limit, a successor for Jaenke must be named by City Council’s Aug. 5 meeting.

“The plan is to make that decision by Aug. 5,” Corcoran said. “If we don’t pick someone by then, a special Council meeting must be called (prior to the Aug. 19 meeting).”

If Council is unable to agree on a replacement, the appointment will fall to Mayor David Gillock. Anyone wishing to enter his or her name for the seat is asked to submit a resume and bio to Corcoran at kcorcoran@nridgeville.org.
