Joseph Christopher Speigle

SpeigleJoeJoseph Christopher Speigle, 42, formerly of Avon, died May 11, 2013, at St. Paul’s Catholic Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, following a five year cancer battle.

After receiving an Associate degree from LCCC, Joe graduated with honors from Ohio University, double majoring in chemistry and philosophy. Self-reliant and responsible, Joe had worked a variety of jobs, including McDonald’s, the U.S. Post Office in Avon, roofing, assembly work, cross-country trucking, and taxi driving “to pay bills”. Joe moved to South Korea to teach English at public and private schools. He mastered the Korean language, worked as a translator/ proofreader, and started his own business translating English to Korean and Korean to English. He became very sought after for his translating skills.

Joe enjoyed hiking, bicycling, camping, motor biking and studying languages, especially French, Japanese and Korean. He will be remembered as a helpful and sharing man who tenaciously fought synovial cancer. Joe often said, “I am in a fight for my life” and he fought “the enemy” so that he could continue translating, socializing and traveling. One final belief Joe expressed to his family was, “God and I will take it from here”.

Left to cherish Joe’s memory are his mother, Mary Speigle of Cleveland; father and step mother, Al and Leslie Speigle of Avon; siblings, Jon (Anne) of Vancouver, Washington, Bonnie (Dan) Zimmerman of Mead, Washington, and David of Seoul, S. Korea; step brothers, Brian (Michelle) Gibson, Vermilion, Kurtis (Sarah) Gibson, St. Petersburg, Florida and Jason (Bridgette) Gibson, Avon; a host of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles; and most special friend, Eun-Jeong Lee of S. Korea.

Grandparents, Cecilia and Alexander Lempeck, Hermaine and Paul Martin Speigle, and Robert Adams, preceded Joe in death.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 28, 2013, from 6 until 8 P.M., in the Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Monday, July 29, 2013, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 35777 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville, with Reverend Bob Franco presiding. Inurnment will follow at St. Peter Parish Cemetery.

Special thanks to Drs. Laura and Richard Kissell for their medical consultations and also to David Speigle, Joann Kissell, Kathi and Rob Huetter and Eun-Jeong Lee for their consistent support of Joseph.
