Boys golf: Avon shines at Grey Hawk Invitational

LAGRANGE — After losing four seniors to graduation some observers may have wondered if Avon would take its usual place among the area’s top teams this fall.
Tuesday, at the Grey Hawk Invitational, the Eagles showed they are back and possibly better than ever.
Junior Ryan Sikora led the way with a 3-over 75 as Avon shot 327 as a team, finishing 12 shots in front of Ravenna (339) to pace the 15-team field.
“I am very happy with the way we performed as a team today,” Avon coach Jeff Stevens said. “I knew our first two guys would shoot low but it was a pleasant surprise to see how well everyone played. This is important to give the guys confidence going into the West Shore Conference season.”
Senior Alex Tomko, one of the two holdovers, along with Sikora, from last year’s team, shot a
7-over 79. Senior Vince Mingo, who, according to Stevens, only picked up the game of golf last year, fired an 83. Matt Jones posted the Eagles’ final score with a 90.
“We were hoping to get a good fourth score, which we did today,” Stevens said. “If we get a fourth score of 90 or better, we’re going to compete in every tournament.”
For Sikora the key to putting up a low score was consistency.
“I played well but I only had two birdies,” Sikora said. “I was hitting my irons solid but some of my putts just weren’t falling today. The wind was very strong, sometime you needed to go up two or three extra clubs, but the key to this course is always to hit your irons well. This was a great win for us as a team to get that first win under our belt and have good thoughts going forward into the rest of the season.”
Lutheran West finished third at 341. Robert Konstan led the way for the Longhorns with a 7-over 79, while Keaton Grossman shot an 83. Midview and North Ridgeville both finished with a 344.
Rangers senior Garrett Orseno earned medalist honors with a 72. Orseno said the unseasonable cold and windy weather was a huge factor on the course.
“It was a rough round,” Orseno said. “I had to hit a lot of clutch irons. It was a rough windy day, but I was just able to stay focused. It was crazy out there. There is so much more wind on this course because there’s not as many trees. I had a lot of up-and-down putts and I was keeping the ball straight off of the tee.”
Orseno’s North Ridgeville teammate Dennis Millgard shot 82. The Middies were led by Justin Quarm’s 81 and an 82 from Ethan Large.
Jacob Bowers led host Keystone with an 87.
Elyria finished fifth with a team score of 357. The Pioneers top two golfers were Mat McFredrick (88) and Ben Haywood (89).
Vermilion (374) and a trio of Patriot Athletic Conference teams – Firelands (384), Wellington (414) and Black River (416) – were the other local representatives in the event.
