Boys golf: Westlake wins Pioneer Invitational

ELYRIA — Hopefully Westlake saved some room in its new high school for extra trophy cases because the Demons are adding to their hardware collection on a daily basis.
Westlake made it three wins in three tournaments this season, besting Avon and Elyria by 11 strokes Wednesday to win the Pioneer Invitational with a score of 304.
Sophomore Patrick Steffen, a transfer from Copley High School, took medalist honors with a 1-over par 71, playing Forest Hills Golf Course for the first time.
“I was hitting the fairways and making putts. It was a great day,” Steffen said. “It was the first time I have ever played this course but when you’ve played for a while it’s easier to adjust to new course. You just have to go out and play the game.”
Steffen finished one stroke ahead of Elyria’s Dylan Edgell, who shot a 2-over 72. Steffen’s older brother, Frank, a Westlake senior, was one of two golfers that shot 75.
“We are both very competitive with each other,” the younger Steffen said. “It’s a lot of motivation for both of us to make ourselves better players to try and beat each other. We have a young team this year and it’s been perfect timing for us to be able to step up and make the team better.”
Another new face that added to Westlake’s prize haul was freshman Nick Wilson, who shot a 12-over 82, but won the longest drive award for a 290-yard tee shot on No. 10.
“All of these guys are new. None of the guys who are giving us the good scores were here last year,” Demons coach Brandon Zepp said. “It’s been a great start to the season. The first day of tryouts I came home and told my wife, ‘These guys are pretty good.’ I am very blessed. These guys do all the work and make my job easy.”
Another freshman, Jules Blakely, rounded out the Westlake scoring with a 6-over par 76.
Avon and Elyria finished with identical scores of 315, the Eagles winning the tie breaker on the basis of No.1 golfer Ryan Sikora’s 78.
Edgell, the No. 3 man in the Pioneers’ lineup, said the team was happy with its performance in the home event.
“I was coming out looking to score low and I’m happy with a 72,” Edgell said. “We’re happy to finish third as a team. Westlake is a good team. They are tough to beat. We’re just looking to keep improving, keep playing hard and continue to work on our game.”
Alex Tomko led the Eagles with a 5-over 75.
A day after winning medalist honors at the Grey Hawk Invitational, North Ridgeville’s Garrett Orseno finished with a 73 to help the Rangers to a fourth-place finish with a 320. His teammate Dennis Millgard also put up one of the best scores of the day with a 78.
Vermilion edged out Midview by one stroke 335-336 for fifth place in the 15-team event.
