UPDATED: Inmate from Lorain County beaten to death in prison

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Prison officials in Ohio say an inmate has died after being beaten by other prisoners over the weekend.

It’s the third fatal attack at the Toledo Correctional Institution within the past year.

Authorities say James Oglesby, 32, died Wednesday from injuries suffered in the attack inside the Toledo prison’s recreation yard on Sunday.

A prison department spokeswoman says two other inmates beat Oglesby with softball bats.

Oglesby was serving a life sentence after pleading guilty in 2006 to aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and kidnapping charges in the death of 49-year-old Michael Smith.

Smith’s body was found in the woods behind a fire-damaged home on West 12th Street in Lorain, which had a reputation as a place the homeless used for shelter and to do drugs, according to a May 2006 Chronicle article.

Oglesby and David DeJesus, who was also convicted, beat Smith inside the home with beer bottles, a television and a lamp, before dragging him outside, where Oglesby hit him in the head with a large rock, according to the article.

Two other inmates in the Toledo prison have died since last September after being attacked by other prisoners.

Records show violence has been on the rise since the prison started doubling up inmates in the same cell to deal with overcrowding.

I agree – hey lets have weapons in prisons! ball bats? naw they are not weapons – only balls are hit with them.
