Evelyn J. Broome (nee Tompkins), 80, of North Ridgeville, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain, following a short hospital stay. She was born September 25, 1932 in Grafton. Mrs. Broome had been a life long resident of Lorain County and resided in North Ridgeville since 1959.
She graduated from Belden High School in 1951 and she was a homemaker. Mrs. Broome volunteered at the Wesleyan Village in Elyria from 1997-2011 and had more than 20,000 volunteer hours during that time. She was a member of the Elyria Four Square Church and she loved going to church and worshiping. Mrs. Broome enjoyed singing, gardening, taking care of her home, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed traveling and fondly remembered the trips that she took with her late husband to Hawaii and The Bahamas.
She is survived by her son, Dan Broome of North Ridgeville; daughters, Renee Deulley (Jim) of Elyria and Rodenda Broome of North Ridgeville; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Marian Tompkins of North Ridgeville; brother, Harland “Hap” Tomkins (Dora) of Wooster; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley H. Broome in 1995; grandson, Jeremy Deulley; sisters, Ruth Goodrich, Viola Broome and Nancy Burton; brothers, Howard Tompkins, Harry Tompkins, Jr. and Virgil Tompkins; and by her parents, Harry and Julia (nee Kelley) Tompkins.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Liston Funeral Home, 36403 Center Ridge Road (at Stoney Ridge Road), North Ridgeville. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 11 A.M. in the funeral home. Pastor Jim Deulley, Mrs. Broome’s son-in-law, will officiate the service. Burial will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Elyria Four Square Church.
