Christine Starnes (nee Freeman), 88, of Amherst Township, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Kingston of Vermilion, following a brief illness. Christine was born March 7, 1925 in Wise, Virginia, moving to South Amherst in 1957. In 1979, she moved to Amherst Township, where she has made her home since.
She devoted her life to making a home for her husband and children and was a member of the Free Pentecostal Church on Russia Road in South Amherst. In her spare time she enjoyed her flower garden and bird watching. She enjoyed the relationships she formed with others and especially her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, James C. (Carolyn) Starnes of Amherst; her daughters, Linda (Dennis) Abraham of Amherst and Brenda Reed of Amherst Twp; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; brother, Joe Freeman of Indiana; sisters, Jeanett Cooke and Doris Wells, both of Tennessee.
Christine was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Isaac J. Starnes; daughter, Judy Ellen; brothers, Ralph, Ruford, Barney, Darrell and Paul; and her parents, Gordon and Martha Freeman (nee Bateman).
Friends may call Thursday, September 5, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be Friday, September 6, 2013 at 11 A.M. in the funeral home. The Rev. Cliff Morris, Pastor of Lakeview Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Kendeigh Corners Cemetery, Amherst Twp.
