Philomena A. Johnson (nee Rovere), 87 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, September 6, 2013, at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain. She was born April 8, 1926, in South Amherst.
Philomena was raised in New York. She returned to South Amherst in 1940, and then moved to Lorain, where she raised her family until moving to Amherst in 1969.
Philomena was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her priorities in life were her home and creating a warm caring environment, not only for her family, but for friends who came to visit. At a young age, after her father passed away, Philomena had to drop out of school and help care for her siblings. She later returned to school at the age of 60 to receive her GED. Philomena was a member of Nativity Blessed Virgin Catholic Church in South Amherst.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia (Johnson) Spicker of Amherst; her son and wife, Michael and Jeanne Johnson of Cleveland; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; her brother, Ralph Rovere of South Amherst; sisters, Fortuna Martin of South Amherst and Elizabeth Blanchard of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Calvin Johnson, in May, 2006; her sons, Cassius “Cash” Kenneth Johnson in 2011 and Kenneth Johnson, Jr. in 1982; her granddaughter, Beth Miglets in 2006; brother, John Rovere; sister, Helen Holovacs; and her parents, Enrico and Philomena Rovere (nee Capasso).
Friends may call Monday, September 9, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M., at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, September 10, 2013, 11 A.M., at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
