Leon Thomas Newton, 61, of Jackson, Mississippi, college professor, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013. Leon was born in Wilkerson, West Virginia, but grew up in Elyria, where he also obtained his high school diploma and was a member of the wrestling team.
After high school he attended Cleveland State University and obtained his B.S. and continued until he obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science. He loved teaching and was a world traveler. Leon authored several books, articles and plays. He was a member of the Dramatist Guild of America and Author League of America, Christian Writer’s Association and Christian Writers Guild.
Leon is survived by his seven siblings, Charles Newton (Johnnie), William H. Newton (Patricia) and Troy Newton (Bonita), all of Elyria, Ernest Newton (Hye) of San Antonio, Texas, Jacqueline Benifield (Philip) of Augusta, Georgia, Barbara Ringo (Charles) of Detroit, Michigan and Georgette Gill (Charles) of Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is also survived by two aunts, Mary Jenkins (nee Newton) and Zeora Bradsher (nee Lockhart); and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mozell and William Newton, Sr.
