Coast Guard searching Black River after boat found unoccupied

LORAIN — The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a search Thursday of the Black River, looking for a potential boat thief or a person who may have fallen off of a vessel.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Yaw said patrols saw an unoccupied boat beached just east of a break wall around 9 a.m. Yaw said the boat had a key in the ignition, but it was out of gas.

“We have a helicopter doing a search to make sure that nobody had fallen off,” he said around noon Thursday.

The search was suspended around 3 p.m. after no new information was discovered.

Yaw said the boat’s owner said he saw the 15-foot work boat Wednesday afternoon, and he had no idea how it ended up on the beach.

Crews conducted a precautionary search of the area, but Yaw said it was unknown if the boat was stolen or if it drifted away from where it was docked at Spitzer Marina.

“If there is credence to it being stolen, that would be dealt with by the local police or sheriff,” he said.
