George M. Straka, 91, of Elyria, died Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, following a long illness. Mr. Straka was born June 6, 1922 in Lorain and lived in Elyria for most of his life.
A 1940 graduate of Clearview High School, he was employed as a dispatcher for Ohio Edison for 37 years. He attended UCLA in California and LCCC. During WWII he served with the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant.
A member of St. Mary Catholic Church, he was a past president of the church’s Holy Name Society and was the CYO Athletic Director and a football and basketball coach at St. Mary School. Mr. Straka also was a member of the American Legion Post 12, the Elyria Senior Fellowship, Ohio Edison Retirees and was a past president of both the Ohio Edison Men’s Club and Toastmasters International. He was a 2009 graduate of Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. Mr. Straka enjoyed golf, fishing, wood carving, gardening and foreign and domestic travel.
Mr. Straka is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marian (Nee Sugaski); son, Dr. Mark (Sue) Straka of Columbus; daughters, Susan (Greg) Sanders of Elyria, Dr. Barbara (Jack) Straka Kenning of Sandusky and Marcia (Kirk) Sarringhaus of Oberlin; he is also survived by eight grandchildren, Brandon (Lisa) Kenning of Huron, Scott (Emily) Sanders of Tampa, Sarah (Jamie) Moan of Sylvania, Dr. Lauren (Jeff) Sarringhaus of Cambridge, England, Dr. Dan (Dr. Brittany) Straka of Columbus, Marisa Sarringhaus of Chicago, David Straka of Sylvania and Meredith Sarringhaus of New Orleans; and eight great grandchildren, Gwyneth and Mallory Kenning, Isabelle Sanders, Jack, Charlie and Ruby Moan, Royce Mauton and Margot Straka.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Steve, John, Charles and Tom; sisters, Betty Carek, Theresa Masin, Martha Kaye and Veronica Kaliszewski; and his parents, Stephen and Veronica (nee Barnik) Straka.
Friends will be received at a continental breakfast in the Weigand Room of St. Mary Church, 320 Middle Avenue, Elyria, Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 9 A.M. until the time of Mass at 10:30 A.M. The Reverend Father Charles Diedrick, Pastor, will officiate. Burial with full military honors provided by the VFW Post 1079, will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria.
