Injured steel worker critical after fall through roof

LORAIN — An injured Republic Steel worker remained in critical condition Saturday.

John Evanish fell about 30 feet through a roof of a water treatment building at the plant at 1827 E. 28th St., according to City Councilman Rick Lucente, D-6th Ward. Lucente works at the plant and is United Steel Worker Local 1104 Pension Committee chairman.

Evanish, 50, was found on the floor of the building around 2 p.m. Thursday. He was hospitalized at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland in critical condition Saturday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

The fall is under investigation by the Toledo office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The company has been investigated by OSHA before.

Republic was fined $1.1 million fine in August for 24 safety violations. Republic was fined $235,000 last year for violations at the Lorain plant including failure to protect workers from fall hazards and unsafe procedures involving hazardous equipment.

Mark Huemme, Republic director of marketing, said Saturday that he didn’t have information on the Thursday’s accident.
