AVON — Elaine Freeman, the wife of North Ridgeville Police Chief Mike Freeman, has been arrested again for allegedly shoplifting from a store in Avon.

The latest arrest came Monday at Kohl’s, Avon Police Chief Richard Bosley said. A report of the incident was not yet completed, but Bosley said Elaine Freeman was charged with theft and taken to the Avon Police Department.

Elaine Freeman was last arrested Nov. 19 when she was caught shoplifting health and beauty products at the Target in Avon. She had her toddler son with her at the time and both were taken to the Avon Police Department.

In the November incident, Mike Freeman drove to the Avon Police Department to pick up his wife and angrily complained about his wife being booked on the theft charge, Bosley said at the time. Mike Freeman has said he wasn’t upset that his wife was arrested, but with how she was treated by Avon police, who kept his wife and child together in a holding area.

Bosley said although Mike Freeman came to the station Monday, there were no problems this time.

Elaine Freeman had her child with her when she was arrested Monday, Bosley said, but the child was placed in an area with a person Elaine Freeman knew who was already on her way to pick her up when the arrest happened.

Elaine Freeman pleaded no contest in March to theft for the November incident. Avon Lake Municipal Court records show she was fined $250, ordered to complete an Economic Crime Program and given a 30-day suspended jail sentence. She was to be monitored for the next two years.

Mike Freeman was given a letter of reprimand and ordered to undergo anger management counseling after North Ridgeville Mayor Dave Gillock determined that the chief’s reaction to his wife’s arrest in November was conduct unbecoming of a police officer.
