George R. Bent II, 85, resident of Kendal at Oberlin CCRC and formerly of Rocky River, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin. He was born March 5, 1928 in Berea, Kentucky.
He graduated from Westtown Friends School in Westtown, Pennsylvania and was awarded degrees from Oberlin College and Woodrow Wilson School for Public Affairs at Princeton University.
From 1946 to 1948, he worked with the American Friends Service Committee in Hungary and France (during a period in which that organization received the Nobel Peace Prize for its relief work in Europe).
After several years of working with C.A.R.E. in the Far East, he returned to the U.S. where he eventually became president of the Pfaudler Company in Rochester, New York and later became president of the Ceilcote Company in Berea.
His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruth (nee Schoeni) Bent; son, George R.; three grandchildren, Miles, Catalina and Liam Bent; and also a brother, Wilson Bent of Yellow Springs, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George R. and Eleanor (nee Hopkins) Bent; sister, Eleanor (nee Bent) Plank; and a cousin, Patricia Midtskog.
A memorial service will be held at Kendal at Oberlin on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 2 P.M.
