ELYRIA — Meghan Costantino may have received the Elyria Apple Queen crown on Saturday, but the Princess Pageant wasn’t about competition for Meghan. It was more about making friends and memories.
Meghan, an Elyria High School student, said she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to interact with the other girls had it not been for the Elyria Apple Festival’s Princess Pageant.
“I met new, very good friends,” she said, smiling. “I would consider us a team.”
Nine girls participated in Saturday’s competition. They were judged on personality, poise, group talent, interview and their creative apple costumes.
Meghan, who dressed up as “Super Apple Girl,” told the judges that she considered her mother, Regina, to be her role model.
“She has worked extremely hard to help me and my sister. … She worked very hard to keep us happy and keep us active,” she said during the interview portion of the competition.
Meghan is the daughter of Regina and Chris Costantino. She participates in the Key Club and plans to attend college to become a nurse anesthetist after graduation.
Meghan said she participated in the Princess Pageant because she wanted “to do something that was important to the community.”
“I think it’s really a memory that will last a lifetime,” she added.
The queen’s court this year consisted of first runner-up Mandy Nedwick, who also took home the best costume
award for her “Red Apple Rock Star” costume. Second runner-up was Cierra McClure, who also won Miss Congeniality, and third runner-up was Rickeysha Lovejoy.
In its 33rd year, the pageant is designed to find a young woman each year to represent the city of Elyria. The pageant is open to girls 16 to 25 years old, but the participants must live in Elyria, according to Linda Brown, the festival’s coordinator.
“I think all the girls would represent the city very well. Meghan is exceptional, and she will be fine representing
us in whatever she wants to do,” she said.
Meghan will receive a $500 scholarship and $1,000 in merchandise from city businesses.
The other girls also received merchandise for their participation.
Brown said Meghan may have received the queen designation, but she considers the girls all to be princesses.
