High school golf: Career round carries Wellington’s Kevin Scott to second at Division II sectional, spot in district

ELYRIA — Kevin Scott picked a good day to shoot the best round of his life.

The Wellington junior broke 80 for the first time Tuesday, firing a 4-over 76 to take second at the Division II sectional tournament at Forest Hills and advance to next week’s district.

“It’s just my favorite course,” Scott said. “I always do good when I play there.”

Scott, whose previous best was an 83 he shot Monday at the Edison Invitational at Sawmill Creek in Huron, had one birdie Tuesday and “made a lot of long putts to save par” in his career round.

He said his confidence was high coming into the sectional.

“I felt good about it,” he said. “I had a solid practice round. I thought I could come in and do pretty good.”

Andrew Bowe took first with a 74, leading Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy to a 325 and the team title, as well. Woodridge was second at 332 and Holy Name third at 333.

The top three teams and individuals not on a qualifying team advance to next Tuesday’s district at Windmill Lake in Ravenna. Bay’s Jack Kyle and Norwayne’s C.J. Gadosic shot 79s and also made it as individuals.

Scott has progressed at a fast pace since taking up the sport two years ago.

“The first time I was ever on a golf course was freshman year,” said Scott, who is also a caddie at Elyria Country Club and takes lessons from ECC professional Nick Fox.

It’s been a nice turnaround for Scott, who came into last week’s Patriot Athletic Conference Tournament at Eagle Creek with high hopes only to stumble in with a 97.

“I was trying too hard,” he said. “I just overdid it.”

Of course, maybe it ended up helping him in the long run.

“I focused on my mental game, more than anything,” he said.
