Man on fire seen undressing, running from flaming car

LORAIN – A suspect in a car fire early Wednesday was seen shortly after the incident, running down the street in flames.

Henry Walker Jr. told police that he woke up at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday at his home on the 200 block of West 29th Street and looked outside to see his car on fire where he had parked it in the street.

Walker’s neighbor, Melissa Kelly, said that she also heard a loud noise and saw the flaming car but she added that she watched as a man ran west on West 29th Street from the scene. She told police that the man was on fire and trying to take off his burning clothes as he ran.

When police arrived at the scene they found a shirt and a hat – both still burning — in the road in front of 221 West 29th Street.

Lorain Fire Department Assistant Chief Jeff Fenn said someone had smashed out the rear window of the car and thrown a flammable liquid inside – typically called a “Molotov Cocktail” or a petrol bomb, which ignited the car.

The car was beyond repair, Fenn said.

Police and the Lorain Fire Department have no suspects yet and no one with burn injuries has checked into a local hospital, according to the police report.
