Shirley Rogers Saddler

Shirley Rogers Saddler, 84, passed away peacefully in her home in Elyria on Friday, September 13, 2013. She was born July 3, 1929 to Elyria scion and automobile dealer Glen A. Rogers and Elsie Riemer Rogers.

Shirley graduated from Elyria public schools and lived her entire life as an active and noted member of the community. In 1954, she married Robert A. Saddler, a transfer student from Pennsylvania whom she met at McKinley School when alphabetized seating placed his desk behind hers in seventh grade. They raised four children together. Shirley was an avid equestrian for whom riding was a lifelong passion: from winning her first horse as a prize from her father for an unexpected “A” in high school math; to taking her horse along with her to college at Ohio Wesleyan University; to raising quarter horses on her beloved Hidden Valley Farm; to practicing dressage precision riding well into her 70′s. She studied physical therapy at Northwestern University and worked as a therapist, stopping only when the demands of raising a family and managing a farm grew too much. After being widowed in 1973, she entered the real estate business, where her detailed knowledge of Lorain County made her an accomplished and successful agent.

Shirley was surrounded by many loving, lifelong friends and enjoyed an active social life to the end. She had a passion for enjoying life, passing on her love of tennis, swimming, golf, reading, nature and travel to her children. Her “happy place” was in the Bahamas, where she visited annually for more than 35 years. She delighted in her family and had recently welcomed all of her children home to attend the 50th anniversary celebration of Lake Ridge Academy, where she was honored for her contributions as a parent in the school’s early years.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband in 1973; by her sister, Patricia Wickard in 1978; her mother in 1975; and her father in 1979.

Shirley is survived by her four children and their spouses, Sally (David Teal), David (Dawn Saddler), Dan (Chris Saddler) and Jane (Bruce Farwell); and by 10 grandchildren, Natalie Saddler Teal, Nathan Saddler Teal, Patrick Burns, Shannon Burns, Michael Burns, Peggy Saddler, Danny Saddler, Robert Farwell, Grace Farwell and Eric Farwell.

A Celebration of Shirley’s life will be 10 A.M., Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 360 Princeton Avenue, Elyria, where Rev. Kathy Ketchum will officiate.

The family suggests memorial contributions in Shirley’s memory to Ohio Wesleyan University and/or their Equestrian Program and Planned Parenthood.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elyria, (440) 322-4626.
