Man injured near steel plants in Lorain

LORAIN — A 32-year-old man was critically injured around 5:10 p.m. Monday near U.S. Steel Lorain Tublar Operations, 2199 E. 28th St.

Herb de la Porte, LifeCare Ambulance vice president, said the man was hospitalized at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Courtney Boone, a U.S. Steel spokeswoman, said an ambulance was allowed on U.S. Steel property, but the man was not hurt on company property and isn’t a company employee. The location where the man was injured is near the Republic Steel plant, 1807 E. 28th St. However, Mark Huemme, Republic marketing director, said the man isn’t a Republic worker and the accident didn’t occur on Republic property.

De la Porte said medical privacy laws forbid him from identifying the man or giving details about his injuries. Emergency dispatch radio transmissions said the man sustained head injuries after being hit by a rock.
