Man injured in fight involving a hammer in Westlake intersection

WESTLAKE — One person was taken to the hospital after an altercation with a hammer in the middle of the street.

Multiple people called 911 at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to report two men beating each other in the intersection at Columbia and Detroit roads in Westlake.

A female caller reported that a motorcyclist pulled up next to a truck and knocked on the truck’s window, according to a 911 recording of the incident. The caller said the occupant of the truck got out of the truck and hit the motorcyclist over the head with a hammer.

“A man hit another man with a hammer in front of me on the street,” the caller tells the dispatcher.

According to callers, both individuals returned to their vehicles to leave the scene.

A 60-year-old Westlake man was transported to St. John Medical Center for treatment of a shoulder injury, according to Westlake Police Capt. Guy Turner.

A 56-year-old Avon man was interviewed about the incident, Turner said.

The incident remains under investigation. The case will be presented the city prosecutor for review.
