Elyria police pursue 2 men suspected of car theft

ELYRIA — A police pursuit of two men suspected of stealing a car began around 9:25 p.m. Sunday around Miami and Michigan avenues was still in progress at press time.

The search for the suspects emcompassed the area between East River Road and Prospect Street, and then spread east toward South Abbe Road and the neighborhoods south of Chestnut Ridge Road.

The pursuit began when police Officer Dan Marsico spotted a 1999 Pontiac Firebird that was reported stolen from West Virginia, and the driver fled when Marsico tried to pull the vehicle over, according to police Sgt. Richard Ellis. The pursuit reached speeds of about 60 mph between East River Road and Prospect Street. The suspects abandoned the Firebird and fled into the neighborhood.

A police dog was called in, but the dog lost the scent of the suspects because of heavy rain, Ellis said.

Ellis said one of the suspects is a man wanted on parole violations in West Virginia and he may have local ties. Ellis said he didn’t know what the violations were about.

More information was not available as of 6:30 a.m. Check back for updates.

Was listening to that on the scanner last night. Does that have any connection to the shooting in the neighborhood the previous evening?
