HINCKLEY TWP. — St. Edward was so dominant Tuesday that Wil Bethune said the “D” word.

The Avon Lake resident had little bravado. The results backed up everything he said.

“I think it’s awesome that we’ve made an impact on Ed’s golf team,” Bethune said. “Hopefully we’ll win more over the next couple years and hopefully start a dynasty.”

Behind Bethune’s runner-up medalist 72 from the No. 4 position, the Eagles (302) won the Pine Hills Division I district tournament by nine strokes over Walsh Jesuit.

It marks the first time tradition-laden St. Edward has won at the district level.

With a lineup full of area residents, the Eagles rolled from start to finish on the difficult 6,748-yard layout to advance to the Oct. 18-19 state tournament at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course. They also gained major bragging rights over archrival St. Ignatius (317), which beat St. Edward by 16 strokes at the Sweetbriar sectional last week.

Bethune was at the forefront with No. 1 and Columbia Station resident Joey Krecic (73). The rebound was clutch for Bethune, whose score didn’t count toward the team total last week.

Bethune was one stroke behind medalist Luke Liberatore from Walsh Jesuit and two ahead of Stow’s Ian Holt, the 2011 Division I co-state champion and Kent State recruit.

“I kept maintaining my composure and kept looking forward to one hole at a time,” Bethune said. “I wasn’t trying to make birdies and stay below the hole.”

Meanwhile, Krecic did what he does best — put himself in position to score.

“We came out here with heart and practiced our butts off during the week,” he said.
“We just tried our best.

“I hit a lot of fairways. I had a chance to birdie on almost every hole and took advantage of it.”

North Olmsted resident Danny Zahn (78) and Columbia Station’s Anton Krecic (79) capped the Eagles’ scoring, while Columbia Station resident Harry Vonderau fired an 81 to score for St. Ignatius.
