Mary Lou graduated from Clearview High School in the class of 1944. She made her home in Elyria since 1966. Mary Lou had attended Fellowship Baptist Church in Lorain. She began working at Colson Corporation in Elyria until Saul Gilford establish Gilford Instruments, Oberlin. Mary Lou joined the Gilford family business and became one of the “original ten employees”. She held several supervisory positions, and retired in 1988, as a senior assembly technician after thirty years of service. As a young women, she enjoyed playing first base with the Frank’s Bakery softball league in Elyria. Mary Lou later joined the Erin-Brew semipro softball team in Cleveland. Her softball and basketball experiences included being part of the state championship teams.
Mary Lou was a member of the Butler Builders of Lorain County. In 1963, she was a part of the Ohio Women’s Bowling team that won the state championship. Her hobbies included softball, bowling, golfing and fishing. Mary Lou was known for her generous spirit. She enjoyed the family time spent at her cottage in Huron and the many trips to Kelley’s Island.
Being the last of 13 children, she is survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family who she treasured.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Samuel, Harry Jr., George, Edward, Charles and Wilbur Wagner; her sisters, Grace Fitzgerald, Dorothy Trifiletti, Wilma Strehle, Catherine VanNiel and Francis Wagner; and by her parents Harry F. and Elizabeth Wagner (nee Miller).
Friends may call Friday, October 25, 2013 from 6 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 11 A.M. in the funeral home. The Rev. Orlando Collazo, Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
