ROCKY RIVER — For the second straight game, Westlake started slowly, this time falling into a deep hole in Saturday afternoon’s Division I district final against Magnificat at Rocky River High School.
This time, though, the Demons couldn’t climb out, as they had Tuesday against Amherst. The Blue Streaks blitzed the Demons for four goals in the first half and used their team speed to outrun Westlake and cruise to a 6-0 victory.
It was the ninth time in 11 seasons the Demons had played in the district final. Magnificat, meanwhile, plays in the Division regional semifinal Tuesday at Rocky River vs. Medina, which beat Copley, 1-0.
On Tuesday, the Demons (9-4-5) tallied one before halftime to cut the Comets’ lead to 2-1 and steal some momentum for the final 40 minutes. But the Blue Streaks were unrelenting, and Westlake contributed with some unforced errors of its own.
“Magnificat has so much team speed and so many quality players and we just didn’t match up well with them,” Westlake coach Scott Jones said. “We did a lot of good things this year, and this one hurts because it was a lopsided game. But we’ll look back and be happy about the result.”
Magnificat (14-4-1) got on the board in the eighth minute with a goal that was simply a result of the Blue Streaks’ speed and skill. Natalie Coury played a well-placed through ball in to Jaycie Brown, who beat Westlake’s charging goalkeeper, Alexis Carpenter.
On each of Magnificat’s remaining first-half goals, though, the Blue Streaks benefited from some Westlake sloppiness. In the 11th minute, a Westlake defender attempted to shield Coury from the ball as it neared the end line in hopes of earning a goal kick. But Coury saved it, attacked the net and when her first shot was saved by Carpenter, she put home the rebound.
In the 27th minute, Carpenter came off her line on a cross by Brown, but collided with her defender as each tumbled to the ground. Anne Ubbing turned and fired a left-footed shot that the Demon defenders couldn’t prevent from finding the open net.
Three minutes later, the Blue Streaks put together a strong 1-2-3 punch, with a pass along the left sideline to Ubbing, who one-timed a cross into the box. Kelsey Matyi beat a Demon defender to it and fired past Carpenter.
“My goal was for our team to peak at the right time, and you never know if you’re going to do that,” Magnificat coach Gretchen Micklitsch said.
